Effective data culture and literacy initiatives depend on three things:

  1. Shifting Mindsets: What are people's attitudes and beliefs? Are they curious about what being data literate means for them? fearful? ambivalent?

  2. Developing a Common Language: Are the terms we use for business, data, and analytical activities consistent and commonly understood across all functions?

  3. Upleveling Skills: How do we think, engage with others, and take action using data?

 

 

The Solution

Collaborated with CDO to determine data strategy, key messages, and talking points.

Led internal enterprise data literacy and change management strategy, framework, key job personas, and playbook.

Developed immediate, near/long-term goals and roadmaps to implement the data literacy program for enterprise under the guidance of the CDO and organizational leadership.

THE CHALLENGE

A need to manage data as an enterprise asset and have data strategies closely tied to cross-functional business objectives.

A need for all roles across the organization to increase awareness, understanding, and use of data to drive decisions, efficiency, and productivity gains.

Tableau just beginning formal integration into Salesforce in Jan 2022; sponsorship in flux.

  • Conducted listening sessions across the organization and reflected “culture snapshot” to ease into radically candid conversations about what works and what doesn’t.

  • Synthesized findings and feedback into a customer journey map and initial data literacy framework.

  • Leveraged framework to identify seven case studies across the organization (internal and external) featuring common data challenges of key data personas.

  • Developed data literacy awareness materials and tools for persona groups.

  • Developed data group’s mission, vision and strategy.

  • Developed key internal data literacy artifacts, influencing marketing frameworks, talking points, and promotional material such as Tableau Blueprint.

  • Case study framing the need for increased experimentation and prototyping in Tableau’s product management function. Developed a suite of materials to uplevel function.

  • Case study framing data warehouse challenge highlighted significant cost savings (~$100k/mo).

  • Partnered with research by proposing a new line of inquiry product research focused on the intersection of disability, accessibility, and data visualization products, promoting data literacy for all.
