Capstone Prerequisites

The capstone assumes that you already have a foundation in business analytics. The challenge here is not learning each skill for the first time. It is learning to use the right skills together, in the right sequence, for a real business problem.

The formal prerequisite is completion of the other required BUAN coursework, including ECON 4110. The questions below describe the kinds of capabilities you should be prepared to bring into the studio.

Q1: CAN YOU WORK WITH DATA?

At Seattle University, this is DATA MANAGEMENT / DATA PREPARATION (###). Learning to acquire, organize, clean, transform, join, and examine data for analysis will help students apply those skills to data that may contain imperfect definitions, missing information, conflicting sources, or other conditions common to professional analytics work.

Q2: CAN YOU CHOOSE AND APPLY AN ANALYTICAL METHOD?

At Seattle University, this is MODELING / DATA SCIENCE / PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS (ECON 4110: Applied Econometrics). You should already have experience using quantitative methods to investigate business questions and interpreting the results. Depending on the problem, your prior coursework may include statistical, economic, financial, predictive, machine-learning, optimization, or related approaches. The capstone does not prescribe one preferred method. Your team will be expected to explain why the method fits the question, data, intended use, and constraints of the engagement.

Q3: CAN YOU USE ANALYTICS TOOLS TO PRODUCE WORKING EVIDENCE?

At Seattle University, this is PROGRAMMING / ANALYTICS TOOLS / VISUALIZATION (###). In the capstone, the goal is not simply to demonstrate that a tool runs. Your team must produce analytical work that can be inspected, tested, interpreted, and connected to a business decision. The course also addresses current analytics and AI-enabled tools where they are relevant to the work.

Q4: CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THE ANALYSIS MEANS?

At Seattle University, this is BUSINESS COMMUNICATION. Technical results do not speak for themselves. You should be prepared to interpret analytical findings, communicate uncertainty and limitations, and present evidence in writing, visually, and orally. In BUAN 4200, you will carry that work further: from analytical result to business meaning, recommendation, implementation, and executive communication.

DATA MANAGEMENT

What You’ll Do

One team. One simulated client engagement. One analytics project carried from beginning to end.

The course is organized around a four-part consulting method:

DISCOVER

Understand the need.

What is happening in the organization? What decision needs support? What does success mean? Who is involved or affected? What data and evidence are available?

You will move beyond the initial request to determine what problem is actually worth solving.

DESIGN

Design the analytics response.

What analytical question should you answer? What data will you need? What requirements and constraints matter? Which analytical approach fits the problem?

You will examine the data, compare plausible approaches, define the analytical product or procedure, and establish how the work will be tested.

IMPLEMENT

Build, test, and validate the work.

Prepare the data. Conduct the analysis. Build the model, workflow, visualization, decision tool, dashboard, or other analytical product appropriate to the engagement.

Then test it.

Your team must be able to show not only what you produced, but how it was developed, checked, revised, and validated.

MAINTAIN

Make the work usable beyond the project.

What should the organization do with the result? Who will own it? What must be implemented, monitored, communicated, maintained, revised, or eventually retired?

A technically correct analysis is not enough if no one can use it responsibly.

The consulting method is adapted from the Discover → Design → Implement → Maintain framework used in the course Field Guide. It treats organizational need, technical work, stakeholder involvement, implementation, and sustainment as parts of one engagement rather than separate concerns.

How the Studio Works

BUAN 4200 is structured as a consulting studio rather than a sequence of unrelated assignments.

Class meetings combine short concept briefings and demonstrations with case analysis, team work, technical and professional consultation, peer critique, project review, guest speakers, and executive-style communication.

Most weeks follow a simple rhythm:

Learn what you need → apply it to the case → show the work → review what happened → decide what comes next.

You will use three primary working resources throughout the engagement.

Consulting Studio Field Guide

The Field Guide introduces the professional practices needed at each stage of the engagement. It is organized around the work you are doing that week rather than as another textbook.

Use it when the project requires a practice: framing a decision, tracing data, comparing methods, testing analytical work, planning implementation, or preparing a handoff.

Analytics Engagement Charter

The Charter is the team's current agreement about the engagement.

It records the business context, decision and analytical question, intended analytical work, scope, success measures, stakeholders, team practices, major data and resource conditions, and circumstances that would require the team to change direction.

It is a living document, but it is not a weekly diary.

Development Journal

The Development Journal shows how the work changes over time.

Each week, teams record three things:

THE WORK
What did we actually do? Where is the evidence?

WHAT CHANGED?
What did we learn, test, correct, narrow, or reconsider?

WHAT'S NEXT?
What is the next consequential piece of work, and who is responsible for it?

The journal should point to the actual project assets—data, code, analyses, visualizations, documents, tests, and other working evidence—rather than becoming another long report.

This follows the same practice-oriented rhythm used in the earlier Seattle University Digital Capstone: review relevant learning material, execute the project work, then review and reflect on the result.

The 10-Week Engagement

Week 1 — Discover: Enter the engagement and frame the business decision
Week 2 — Discover: Define the analytical question, scope, stakeholders, and measures of success
Week 3 — Discover: Understand the data environment and prepare the data
Week 4 — Design: Design the analytical response and select an appropriate method
Week 5 — Design: Plan the analytical work, validation, tools, and responsible AI use where applicable
Week 6 — Implement: Build the analytical product or procedure and test the work
Week 7 — Implement: Validate the results and determine what the evidence can responsibly support
Week 8 — Maintain: Translate the analysis into implementation, ownership, monitoring, and sustainment
Week 9 — Maintain: Integrate the complete consulting argument and prepare the handoff
Week 10 — Deliver: Review, rehearse, finalize, and prepare for executive presentation

The examination period is used for formal team presentations, questions, and project handoff.

What You Will Produce

Across the quarter, your team will develop the professional evidence needed to take an analytics project from initial problem through validated analytical work and organizational use.

That work includes:

  • a project charter and consulting agreement;

  • data and project design evidence;

  • a working analytical product or procedure and validation record;

  • project reviews;

  • a final consulting report;

  • an executive presentation; and

  • selected individual evidence for your professional portfolio.

The project must connect a business decision → relevant data → appropriate analytical method → validated findings → usable analytical work → implementable recommendation and handoff.

What You Leave With

The goal of BUAN 4200 is not simply to finish one more analysis.

It is to develop experience carrying analytics all the way to use.

By the end of the course, you should be better prepared to enter a business problem that is not already neatly defined, determine what evidence and analytical work are needed, build and validate that work, communicate what it means, and consider what has to happen after the analysis is delivered.

You will also identify selected, truthful evidence of your own contribution that can be adapted for a professional portfolio.

The analytics matter. So does what happens next.
